Dear Daddy

Dear Daddy

Dear Daddy, I thought I would write down a few lines,
To remind us of the memories,
We had some really fantastic times.
I’m afraid there were some things, I couldn’t tell you about,
Because I was quite a naughty boy
And I didn’t want you to shout.

I’d go ‘scrumping’ in the orchard- run amok with knock -a -door run.
Skip school on the occasional morning,
Just so I could have some fun.
Play kiss chase with all the lovely girls and snog them one by one.
But then I realised that I shouldn’t have worried.
Those were things that you had done.

You were a loving Dad always and everything between us was great,
We’d play games and then watch TV,
Sometimes staying up quite late.
You taught me the difference between, what is right and wrong,
Took me on days out and holidays.
Those journeys oh so long.

But the best bits were always - building castles in the sand.
Then we’d walk the beach barefooted,
Whilst I held onto your hand.
You’d tell me stories of your childhood and all the adventures that you’d had.
It made me feel all warm inside,
To know you were my Dad.

Recent weeks have been hard to watch, as you drifted and faded away.
The giant sparkle in your eyes,
Grew smaller, day by day.
But when you opened up those eyes, that sparkle truly shone.
Then seeped away like a fading light,
Until the spark was gone.

Now you are no longer with us – It breaks my heart in two.
Because I can’t discuss my plans,
Like we always used to do.
But I will still remember, all the conversations that were said.
For they are now my memories
And embedded in my head.

Do not fear for this world left, nor your journey yet to come.
For you have enriched us all. You have achieved
Much more than some.
So goodbye now Dear Daddy. The angels have ‘come to call’.
This day a long time coming.
It’s the final innings ball.
I will be sad at your passing, but shall remember those days full of fun.
So sleep tight now, Dear Daddy.
Much Love, Your loving son. X

I wrote this poem for my Dad and read it out at his funeral. It has a very strong message. His last few days were difficult to watch but I know he would have liked it. He was always a great supporter of my writing. The poem went down well with everyone and some of the comments truly inspiring and heartfelt.

“Intensity is strong,

overwhelming at times

but I am stronger.”

"Two lovers kissed on that lonely lane.

But cupids arrow missed, their love will never be the same."
