The Caling
Danny stood atop the giant gaping machine. Blades whirred with menace and the serrated threads turned. After finally reaching his thirtieth birthday, it was now Danny’s time. His life now over, he would give back to the land. His remains would be minced from the machine and strewn across farmland. His nutrients given back to the earth.
His ‘Calling’, his thirtieth had arrived. Danny smiled and waved to the baying crowd. They cheered his name, both he and the other two, whose ‘Calling’ had also come.
It was a glorious day. They all jumped. Then they spewed from the machine.
